PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE EN PLEIN AIR

This three-day workshop will focus on the outdoor sketch– a key to understanding light and color. The instructor will open each day with a lecture and demonstration, after which students will paint and receive individual critiques of their work. The class will focus on learning to see like an artist, emphasizing the fundamental principles necessary to quickly and accurately capture the beauty of nature when painting outdoors. Among topics covered: values, hue, saturation, drawing, edges, design, and paint application. We will also discuss artistic style, and the importance of painting from life as a means to developing one’s own individual voice. We will meet the first day at the studio and then detailed directions will be given to go from there to paint both the urban and rural landscape. Each day will bring unique vistas and challenges. Should we encounter terrible weather, we will have the option to paint the portrait indoors from a live model. We are so fortunate that Josh is skilled at painting any subject. He says, “Artists who focus on seeing clearly and asking the right questions can break anything down into simple shapes of color”.
Students of all levels are welcome. We will be painting in local Raleigh parks and farms. You will want to bring a packed lunch each day and you must be able to walk carrying your own art gear. Please plan to bring your own plein air easel along with the other materials listed at the link below.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Born in 1982, Josh grew up drawing and was rarely without a pencil and paper, but it wasn’t until he began studying art at BYU-Idaho that he began painting. That first oil painting class included a trip to the galleries in Jackson Hole (his first visit to an art gallery or museum) and completely changed the course of his life. Since graduating with a BFA in illustration from BYU-Idaho in 2007 Josh has been supporting himself and his family with art–and he thanks God every day for that remarkable blessing. He figures that if he can paint all day, every day, for the next 20 years, eventually he’ll paint something pretty decent.
