JOSHUA CLARE:
PORTRAIT DRAWING IN CHARCOAL
3 Day Workshop
March 21-23, 2022
10-5p
The simple, abstract beauty of line, when combined with accurate values and thoughtful edges, is one of the most beautiful mediums of human expression. The aim of this course is to to give students both a sound understanding of how to draw accurately, and time to practice doing what they learn. We will cover:
- How to handle the medium of charcoal
- Basic skills fundamental to drawing accurately from life
- Several approaches and techniques that can be used in drawing from life: the charcoal lift-out, toned paper lift out, and the painterly approach.
Each day will begin with a lecture and demo from the instructor after which the students will all draw from life while the instructor offers individual critiques and advice.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Born in 1982, Josh grew up drawing and was rarely without a pencil and paper, but it wasn’t until he began studying art at BYU-Idaho that he began painting. That first oil painting class included a trip to the galleries in Jackson Hole (his first visit to an art gallery or museum) and completely changed the course of his life. Since graduating with a BFA in illustration from BYU-Idaho in 2007 Josh has been supporting himself and his family with art–and he thanks God every day for that remarkable blessing. He figures that if he can paint all day, every day, for the next 20 years, eventually he’ll paint something pretty decent.
