SAMANTHA HARING
PAINTING OBJECTS IN SPACE
3 Day Workshop
October 11-13, 2024
10:00 – 5:00pm

Tuition $600

Description:
Space is the place. The atmosphere around objects in a still life is as powerful and important as the objects themselves. How we arrange things in pictorial space – where forms overlap, the gaps between them, and the shifting colors in the background – has a significant impact on the emotional content and narrative potential of a painting. In this workshop, we will explore different compositional tools for arranging elements and creating air space in an image. We will experiment with different tonal relationships to evoke powerful moods, and we will create a final painting based on that visual research. Our time together will be split between lectures, demos, quick sketches and at least one longer resolved painting.

Projected Schedule:
Friday (Day 1)
– Introductions
– Precedents: compositional analysis and space
– Exercise: drawing thumbnails for composition, space, and shape.
– Value study thumbnails, experimenting with different tonal keys

– Exercise: limited palette thumbnails, personal color exploration
– Select palette and block in final painting

Sunday (Day 3)
– Precedents: level of finish, modulating edges
– Work day on final painting
