Six-week Online Course with weekly feedback

Tuition: $245

With generous support from an anonymous donor, AFAS is able to offer five full tuition scholarships for Black or Indigenous students. If interested, please apply here.

This six-week online course will guide you from the very fundamentals of oil painting to learning an indirect approach to portrait painting. Painting indirectly means that you spend multiple sessions on the same painting (as opposed to direct painting, also known as alla prima painting). You will learn how to successfully build a layered painting with great depth and luminosity. Topics such as the benefits of using an underpainting with an open or closed grisaille method, color mixing, measuring for likeness, and some advanced techniques such as glazing and scumbling will be discussed. We will focus on capturing a likeness with sophisticated color and tone. With feedback on weekly homework assignments, you will gain confidence and accuracy in representing the portrait in oils.

Online Classroom:
This online course will meet live each week on Zoom. Recordings of these sessions will be available within 24 hours for those who are unable to join us live or for students to re-watch. Each class will include a slide lecture with historical examples, painting demonstrations, as well as plenty of time for Q&A. Homework assignments will be given weekly with feedback offered in a private Facebook group. Ideally you will be able to work from a live model. Using a member of your household, or your own reflection in a mirror to be able to work from life will make this process of accurately seeing much easier. Alternatively, video recordings of my model from a few angles will be provided. Each weekly assignment will take approximately 3 hours to complete. You are encouraged to post your assignments in a private Facebook group where I will be able to give you feedback, as well as support your peers.

Each recorded 2 hour class includes a slide lecture, demo, and Q & A or discussion.
