Materials List: Group Figure Composition Painting

Bring a sketchbook and pencil to class each week. Between thumbnails and notes, you won’t regret it!

PAINTING SUPPLIES:
2-4 9 x 12in canvases, oil paper sheets, panels, or canvas pad – these will be for value and color studies of masters, as well as of our own compositions

1 stretched Canvas or Panel no wider than 36” – you won’t need this until week 3 or 4 so you may want to wait until you have a plan for your composition.

Palette (I prefer my old wooden one, but paper pallets are ok especially if you can find a middle grey toned paper pallet)

Palette Knife- 2” tear drop shape

Refined Linseed oil or your preferred medium

Gamsol Odorless Minderal Spirits

Lidded Container for Solvent (preferably not glass in case of accident)

Little Container for medium (palette cups work well)

Paper Towels

Brimmed Hat or visor (ball caps work well)

SELECTION OF OIL PAINT:

(I prefer Old Holland brand, but Gamblin, Winsor & Newton, or Holbein are suitable)

Titanium White (or  Lead White – I prefer Rublev’s Lead White No. 1)

Yellow Ochre

Raw Sienna

Burnt Sienna

Vermillion (must be Old Holland or Rublev; NOT Rembrandt)

Alizarin Crimson permanent

Manganese Violet or Cobalt Violet

Raw Umber

Burnt Umber

Green Earth

Ultramarine Blue

Ivory Black

(Optional colors: Cadmium Yellow light, Cadmium Red, Cerulean Blue, Viridian Green)

SELECTION OF BRUSHES:

(Windsor & Newton Monarch Series; Trekell Legion or Opal Series; or Rosemary Eclipse or Ivory Series Brushes):

Brights, Flats and Filberts in various sizes (at least 2 small, 2 medium and 2 large)
