In this course, we will sculpt a 1/3 life size seated figure, using contemporary hand building techniques informed by Renaissance and 19th century sculpting practices. Working from a live model, we will begin by focusing on the large masses of the the body, and how they move in concert together, to form a clear gesture. Our approach is based around close observation, and an emphasis on anatomical structure and form relationships. Students will learn how to think three-dimensionally, judging likeness with volume and mass.
The class will cover basic anatomy, and how to use proportional cannons or measuring systems to sculpt a well proportioned figure at any scale. We will cover basic “block-in” technique, learning how to accurately establish the large relationships of the figure, before moving on to modeling and finishing techniques for clay.
We will be working with stoneware clay, slab building pieces. Students will go home with an unfired sculpture. The class will include sculpting demonstration, constructive critiques, and lecture. No experience is necessary, teaching will be tailored to individuals.
Recommended materials: Notepad with pencil or pen, calipers, clay cutting wire, fettling knife, rolling pin, serrated metal rib, clay sculpture “rake” tool, knife-like wooden tool, clay scoring tool, measuring tape.
Alia Fine Art Studios will provide each student with: a 25lb bag of water based clay, a water resistant board to work on, wire as necessary, access to spray bottle, rolling pins (or perhaps a slab roller), as well as access to scissors.
