ANGELA CUNNINGHAM
FIGURE DRAWING IN CHARCOAL
3 Day Workshop
March 20 – 22, 2026
10:00 – 5:00pm
Tuition $550
Model Fee: $50
We are excited to welcome Angela Cunningham back to Alia Fine Art Studios. Angela was one of our first invited artists our founding year, back in 2017!
In this class, students will draw the figure from observation using charcoal and pan pastel. Emphasis will be placed on accuracy in both block-in and form modeling, using sponge-tip tools that allow for a painterly approach while maintaining the precision of drawing.
The first day will focus on understanding and practicing the visual tools of blocking-in. Students will tone their paper and work directly on the surface, using both additive and subtractive (erasing) methods to establish clear light and shadow shapes. This traditional academic approach strengthens comparative measuring and shape-seeing abilities, building a solid foundation for accuracy and gesture.
In the form modeling stage, students will be introduced to the conceptual principles of light on form. They will learn to move beyond purely visual observation toward a more conceptual understanding of how light defines structure and value. Each student will develop a strategic method of thought and process to approach modeling three-dimensional form with clarity and control.
This will be a three-day long pose, allowing time to refine patience, focus, accuracy, and sensitivity to subtle detail. Students can expect to leave with a strong grasp of a systematic approach and a carefully studied, well-developed figure drawing. The instructor will provide demonstrations and one-on-one guidance throughout the course.
Beginner and more experienced artists are welcome.
