PAINTING A MASTERCOPY PORTRAIT
4 Wednesdays 6:30 – 9:30pm
*Class meets 10/29; 11/5; 11/12; 11/19
Painting Mastercopies is a time-honored exercise to gain a deep understanding of oil painting. In this 4 week class each student is encouraged to choose a portrait painting (by a nonliving artist) that truly intrigues and inspires them. Each student will be responsible for finding high resolution images as their reference. Google Art Project is a great place to start. We will work step by step to break down the value structure, composition and process of the painting they have chosen. Alia will be copying Rembrandt van Rijn’s Painting of an Old Man from 1632 as her demo painting. With this demo she will be able to discuss various painting techniques such as indirect painting, glazing, scumbling and bold impasto brush work. This class is limited to just 12 students.
Week 1: Small Value Study & Small Color Study and preparation for larger painting
Week 2: Underpainting of Mastercopy
Week 3: First Pass of Color
Week 4: Last Pass of Color and Final Touches
